Origin: New Guinea Upper Sepik River, Washkuk Hills, Kwoma people
Period/Date: Circa 1920-40
Materials: Hardwood, mother of pearl shell buttons, lime, red ocher and blue pigments.
Description: This large and unique mask retains much of its bold pigments. It was likely worn as a frontlet mask on a larger costume. It features projecting conical eyes with inset mother of pearl trade buttons. These would have been special and more prestigious than shell. Its large mouth has divided and exposed teeth, making it very expressive! It has a broad nose with pierced nasal septum. The back has an old label as well as a Grub Worm track. In good condition with old loss to the left ear. Nice patina and oxidized pigments.
