Nigerian KORO SOCIETY ABRUS SEED Woven Helmet Mask
Nigerian KORO SOCIETY SEED-COVERED Helmet Mask
Origin: Nigeria, Koro or Angus people (Provenance: Ex. Tayor Dale Santa Fe, NM. Prior to that in an old Uk collection.)
Period/Date: Likely early 20th century
Materials: fiber, string, cotton, abrus seeds
Description: This is an OLD example. It takes many years for the bright red seeds to oxidize this dark! It has a strong presence and retains much of its bead and cotton fringe around the perimeter. It has been danced a lot and is well-used and thus has some areas of missing seeds and small voids. It comes with a wood and metal display stand that is adequate but doesn't appear custom made.
Dimensions: Overall Height 15.75” (40 cm), width 8.25” (21 cm)
