Detailed Congo Kuba Male King figure with Old Label
Origin: Dem Rep of Congo, Kuba people (Provenance: Acquired from an old collector in Portugal )
Period/Date: circa mid-20th century
Materials: light to medium color hardwood
Description: Finely carved Kuba male king figure (ndop) depicting king Lukengu. His royaly sits cross legged on a square platform (yiing) carved with representation of a creeper vine. Note the detail of his Leopard skinvestment and braided belt. He has a distinctive projecting hoe-shaped headdress decorated with carved cowrie shells around the edge and an interlocking pattern. Its bottom base has two heavy imprints with an old die stamp reading 8331 8330. In addition, it retains an old price tag label reading: "Lisbon Portugal 1966, king Lukengu Bakuba Tribe Belgian Congo, 500 Rei Kasai". In good condition with an old glued mend to the headdress. Minor narrow age crack to the base.
