Origin: Dem. Rep. of Congo, Mbolo region, Yaka People Provenance: Ex, Charles Derby Collection- Massachusetts, Deaccessioned from a southern California Museum (see inventory numbers)
Period/Date: Old style- at least early 20th century, likely older
Materials: hardwood, libations, traces of pigment
Description: This fascinating early fetish with artfully sculpted highly abstract body features undulating block legs and three-tier segmented meandering body. Notice how the head is facing "backwards" which is apparent from the side view! Its sensitive angular face has an open mouth. Its minimalist yet sophisticated, with the wedge-like headdress duplicating the angle of the bent legs. It has a semi-encrusted varied and oxidized patina turning from a warm brown to black acquired from long use. Good condition, hairline age crack to right side.
