New Guinea Abelam "Baba" BASKETRY INITIATION MASK w/ Cassowary Feathers
Origin: New Guinea, N. Middle Sepik, Prince Alexander Mountains (Provenance: Ex. collection of Lloyd Morain, Carmel California)

Materials: Plaited fiber, natural earth pigments, Cassowary feathers
Description: This classic baba helmet mask with bold pigments has its bundle of Cassowary bird feathers still intact around its radial headdress. It has acquired a thick semi-encrusted patina with layered pigments and has obviously been used in numerous initiation ceremonies with many applications of pigments. It is in good condition with a few broken strands of rattan.
