19TH C. FIJIAN Rootstock Club w/ SENNIT BINDING
Origin: W. Polynesia, Fiji (Provenance: Acquired from an old collection in Maui HI)
Period/Date: Early to mid 19th century
Materials: Vesi ironwood, sennit binding
Description: This large rootstock club has many lobes surrounding its striking head and is presented on a custom metal display stand. At one time its entire shaft was covered with sennit binding which shows several weaving techniques. Approximately 8 inches of its original binding remains. Above the carved handgrip there is a band of cross weaving with a diamond pattern which is very attractive. Dry varied patina along the shaft compared to a richer deeper color on its head and handgrip. In good condition with minor dents, age cracks, and loss to the binding already mentioned.
