Classic C. 1900 Philippine Bontoc FIGHTING SHIELD


Origin: Northern Philippines, Luzon, Bontoc People    


Period/Date: C. 1900


Materials: Hardwood, rattan, Charcoal Paint


Description: This shield has generous proportions and has a rattan wrapped handle with impressive use patina. Four horizontal bands of thick red rattan add strength for hard battle impacts. This example has been used in battle and has seen generational use. There are two native mends to the bottom region made with wire. It features a semi-encrusted varied surface turning to black. Some wear and rubbing to inside right edge.
