Classic Antique Solomon Island Wicker War Shield w/ Handle
Origin: Melanesia, Solomon Islands, New Georgia or Bougainville Provenance: Found in an old collection of nautical antiques in Silver Springs Maryland.
Period: First quarter of the 20th C.
Materials: Bent wood, rattan, bark stem
Description: This lovely example is in good condition and even retains its original handle which is often missing! It is about 95 percent complete and only has small areas of missing or broken stitches. Tightly woven shields like these were effective against arrows and even spears. It is decorated with a darker accent fiber woven into styles birds. The triangular shape at its top reminds me of the headdress commonly seen on Buka dance clubs and staffs.
