Elegant 18th C. Fijian Adze w/ Original Sennit Binding, Fiji
Origin: Western Polynesia, Fiji Provenance: Purchased by a Los Angeles collector from Mauna Kea Galleries Hawaii 20 years ago
Period: 18th century
Materials: Hardwood, stone, sennit binding
Description: This woodworking adze was originally bought as being "Tahitian", however, comparable examples only support Fijian origin. It is the oldest and finest example we had in 30 years. Amazingly, it retains much of its original coconut fiber "sennit" binding, tightly securing its stone blade to its hafting. Its stone blade features a flat tapered at the tip to enhance cutting. The stone is in great condition and only has tiny micro chips on its striking edge. The handle of its wood hafting has acquired an advanced generational patina, turning from dark red to black. Presented on a custom metal display stand.
Dimensions: Height 17.5” (44.5 cm), Width 8” ( cm)
