C. 1920's Northwest Coast, Bear Clan, Haida Totem Pole, 7 FT !

Origin: Canada, British Columbia      (Provenance: Ex. Collection of Casey Conway, Arizona. Acquired from a collector in Washington state, by descent through the family)

Period/Date: Circa 1920's

Materials: Medium hardwood, likely Spruce, Natural pigments and trade paint

Description: This traditional totem is very graphic, bold and expressive! According to the previous collector it was struck by lightening in the village and has since been preserved and kept indoors. It was the made by the Haida Bear clan as clearly shown in its iconography. Going from the top down we see a fragmented seated bear holding a classic Haida figure or welcome doll. At its midsection, in bold black, there is a classic Killer Whale transforming into a Bear. The bottom portion is a standing Bear with exposed teeth with arms resting on its legs. It shows age, wear and expose all over. There are both natural and trade paints used in layers. The back side is hollowed out in the classic manner. Its bottom base has some and fragmentation. It has an expressive spiritual countenance in person and would be a "focal point" in any room or collection. It hangs and displays great on any wall, but a custom stand may be made upon request.

Dimensions:  Height 85” (216 cm), width 11.75” (30 cm), Depth 10.25" (26.5 cm)
