19th C. Fijian Stone Adze with Fine Sennit Binding


Origin:  W. Polynesia, Fiji     


Period/Date: First Quarter of the 19th C.


Materials: Wood, stone, coconut sennit fiber


Description: This lovely wood working adze has a handsome hafting with long handle. It retains its original stone blade and sennit binding. It has seen generations of use and has acquired a dark rich varied patina. In good condition with some minor old chips. There is some engraving on the base of the handle but is not legible.


Dimensions:  Length 25.5” (64.5 cm), width 7.5” (19 cm)
