Origin: Sub Arctic Bering Sea, St. Lawrence Island (Previously in a San Diego Collection of quality Eskimo and Native American Artifacts)
Materials: Stone, bone, leather, traces or RED pigment on top of stone
Description: This adze has an ancient stone with bone hafting handle pierced in three places near the top. These were used effectively for cutting wood, bone and Ivory. The black stone is tightly lashed with hide possibly of Sea Lion? It has been used for generations and has acquired a magnificent patina on its handle. On the back of the hide laced hand grip are various interesting hatch marks or "kill marks".
