New Guinea BLACKWATER RIVER Long Nose Tumbuan MASK
Origin: New Guinea, East Sepik Province, Blackwater River, probably Kabriman Village region (Provenance: Collection of Mary Memory Santa Monica CA. Acquired in the 1980's via personal friend Jean Michel Cousteau (Jacques Cousteau son). Cousteau acquired it from the National Museum in Port Moresby.)

Description: This long nose wickerwork mask is a male example called "nario" and represents a water spirit. Although a late example, it was ceremonial used and retains its feather and Cassowary feather adornment. It has a bold spiritual presence with nicely formed raised conical eyes and shelf-like mouth. Much of its applied charcoal, lime and ocher paint is intact. In good condition and presented on a custom wood and metal display stand (not photographed).
