Scarce & Refined Solomon Island Fishing Float w/ Bonito Fish
Origin: Melanesia, Solomon Islands, Possibly Malaita
Period/Date: Circa 1930's-40's
Materials: hardwood, rattan, stone, fiber, nut resin/ charcoal paint
Description: This slender fish float shows delicate and refined craftsmanship. The top has a classic Bonito fish with fiber cord wrapped around the body. It is carefully balanced and weighted to float vertically in the water and not sink. A selectstone of specific weight is beautifully attached to the bottom of the shaft with rattan basketry weaving. In good condition showing obvious use with some rubbing and wear. No mends or repairs.
