Important New Guinea Upper Sepik River Washkuk Janus Face Cult Mask w/ Hornbill Bird
Origin: New Guinea, Upper Sepik River, Washkuk (Provenance: Field Collected by Lynda Cunningham, Philmont NY)

Description: This is the most unique piece I've seen from this region. It features two large oval masks lashed together and surmounted by a lovely Hornbill bird. I feel the mask would have been too large to be worn or danced. Logically it fits the role of a clan mask or totem much better, perhaps a Hornbill Clan Totem? In between the two masks is an elaborate enigmatic fetish or "magic bundle" comprised of rattan, Boars Tusks, Dog Teeth, seed pods, bush string and pigments. In person it has a warm positive countenance and the pigments looks older than the photos. Each mask retains about 65-75% of its lime paint but some has worn off from age and use. A very impressive piece which would be a focal point in any room. Presented on a custom metal display stand.
Dimensions: Height 66” (168 cm), width 27” (68.5 cm)
