UNUSUAL New Guinea Middle Sepik ZOOMORPHIC HEADREST W/ ANCESTOR FACE
Origin: New Guinea, Middle Sepik, Blackwater River or possibly Chambri Lakes?
Period/Date: Early to mid 20th century
Materials: Hardwood, traces of pigment and lime
Description: This fascinating headrest is well used and has a surrealistic ancestor face on one end and a zoomorphic Amphibian-like face on the other end (possibly a Salamander?). Its body has deeply caredclan motifs on each side. One of the four platform feet are curved upward, following the natrual shape of the wood. There is noteworthy wear on the top and edges especially. It has a dry varied surface with intense textured wood grain on top. In good condition with some minor old insets holes.
