A FINE & BOLDLY PIGMENTED ABELAM WOVEN KARAHUT FIGURE

Origin:  New Guinea,  N. of the Middle Sepik River, Foothills of the Prince Alexander Mountains, Abelam People (Provenance:  Previously in an old German Collection)

Description:  This "karahut" is woven from hibiscus bark twine, decorated with boar's tusks, and small Nasa shells with applied red and yellow ochre pigments.  It comes mounted on a custom metal display stand.  Karahuts  are used in a number of ceremonies.  During dancing they are held between the teeth using a string coming out from the back about the level of the eyes.  When not being used they are hung around the neck and lie in the middle of the man's back.
