ZAMBIAN MASK

 

Origin:   South Central Africa, Zambia, Likely Lungu People  (Provenance: Collection of James Willis, San Francisco)

Period/Date: Likely Early 20th century

Materials:  Wood, Cloth, Fiber, old wire

Dimensions:  Height 8.75" (22.5 cm),  Width 5.5"  (14 cm) 

Description:  Here's a classic old Zambian Mask (presented on a custom metal stand).  It shows serenity of expression with a carefully formed mouth.  There is worn scarification around the eyes to the sides and lower lids.  There is an old glued mend to the left ear.  Its has evident wear and traditional use having acquired a varied brown patina.  Note: this mask is far better in person that the photos approximate.
