19TH C. NIGERIAN EQUESTRIAN IJEBULAND FIGURE

 

 

 

Origin: Nigeria, Ikorodu region,  Ijebuland People  (Provenance: Ex. collection of Dr. George Alan Solem (curator of invertebrates at the Field Museum of Natural History, Chicago)    Dr. Solem acquired the figure from Merton Simpson, NY in the late 1970's.   Dr. Solem died in 1990.  For more information and a complete biography click here )

Period/Date: 19th century

Materials: wood, gold, pigments, libations

Description:  This fine little equestrian figure likely stood with many other figures on a large Magbo mask from the Oro Society.  Its layered-encrusted surface has bright orange pigments over wood, applied gold, and finally libations and other substances.  the rider has a wonderfully expressive face.  There is some loss to the horse's front legs.  Presented on a custom bronze base.  I recently saw a similar example in the gallery of Ratton- Hourde' in Paris (see photo below).
