19TH C. YORUBA EQUESTRIAN DIVINER'S BOWL

 

 

Origin: Southwest Nigeria, Yoruba People  (Provenance: Patrick M. Morgan Paris France, prior to that in an old New England collection)

Period/Date:  At least Early 20th C., Likely late 19th Century

Materials: Hardwood, libations

Description:  This old divination bowl was executed by a skilled artist who is mostly document as a known hand.  He captured the intensity of the rider coupled with dynamic motion.   It has acquired a semi-encrusted dry patina from long use.  There is some minor erosion and several age cracks.  Some loss to the riders left foot but in overall good condition considering its age.
