PAIR OF 19TH C. WOOMERAS

Origin:  Central or Western Desert    (Provenance:  Previously in an old UK collection)

Period/Date:  C. 1900-- likely older

Materials:  hardwoods of red and dark brown, sinew, spinifex resin, fiber, bone?

Description:  Two very old woomera spear throwers in good condition retaining their original barbs and spinifex resin around the pommels of the handgrips.  The smaller, almost black example, is carved from some of the darkest wood I've seen.  The longer reddish one has attractive rippling around portions of the edges from natural shrinkage over time.  I would describe their surface patinas as mellow smoky and varied.  In good condition showing normal wear and minor losses.
