FIJIAN ULA WITH ASYMMETRICAL HEAD W/ TOP KNOB

Origin: W. Polynesia, Fiji   (Provenance: Ex. Casey and Laurie Conway Collection, Ex. David Rosenthal San Francisco)

Period/Date: Likely first quarter of the 19th Century

Materials:  root of a shrub

Description:  This ula with asymmetrical lobed head and top knob is a smaller example that would have been employed for hunting birds and flying foxes.  What I especially like about it is the bold and deeply carved "tavatava" on the handgrip.  It has an especially impressive dark rich chocolate patina.  Presented on a custom metal display stand.
