#18 SMALL FIJIAN ULA WITH  DENSE SYMMETRICAL HEAD 

 

Origin: W. Polynesia, Fiji   (Provenance: Acquired from a San Francisco Bay Area Collection)

Period/Date: Likely Mid 19th Century

Materials:  root of a shrub

Description:  This ula is about one third smaller than a full size example.  It is most similar in size and scale to ula #4.  Again, smaller versions were employed for hunting birds and flying foxes.  Its precisely formed head is compact in its density and has 12 divided lobes.  Its shaft and head are slightly curved    It had 4.5" of incised "tavatava" on the handgrip.   The head has two age cracks but are positioned on the low crevasses between the lobes not affecting its overall beauty.  Warm dark brown patina.
