#12  19TH C. FIJIAN "ULA" THROWING CLUB W/ 3 SETS OF LOBES

 

Origin: W. Polynesia, Fiji   (Provenance: Old New England Collection, Ex. Brant Mackley, Hummelstown Pennsylvania)

Period/Date:  Early 19th Century 

Materials:  root of a shrub: i ula drisi

Description: This Ula features a compact head with carefully formed lobes.  This type has radial carved bands of smaller lobes around the top knob and at the base of the shaft.  It has 6 inches of incised "tavatava" on the handgrip.  Its butt is pierced to receive a wrist cord.  There is an old separation in the head as noted in the photo below.  In good condition otherwise with two minor chips to the butt.   Warm mellow patina.
