MAGNIFICENT UGANDA BATTLE AXE

 

 

Origin:  N.E. Africa, N. Uganda, Likely Acholi People  (Provenance:  In February we purchased a 350+ piece collection of African and Oceanic Weapons from an English Gentlemen in Suffolk UK.  This special "axe" is among a small group of quality pieces we've held back specifically for our website clients)

Period/Date: Late 19th- Early 20th century

Materials: Hardwood, forged iron, copper, lead

Description:  In addition to being an effective weapon, this superbly crafted axe would have afforded its owner a high level of prestige.  It would have been used in battle as well as in important ceremonies and dances.  Its shaft features hundreds of lead inlays mixed with copper embellishments in various geometric shapes.  In excellent condition (minor pitting and rust on the blade).  Please note:  The stand shown was borrowed from another object.  A custom metal stand may be ordered for an additional fee.
