A CLASSIC ANTIQUE TUTSI DANCE SHIELD

 

Origin:   Central East Africa, Rwanda, Lake Kivu, Tutsi People (Provenance: Ex. Clive Loveless- London, Ex. Andres Moraga- Berkley CA, Ex. Collection Randy Kahn Tarzana CA)

Period/Date: Early 20th Century

Materials:  Wood, Natural Pigments (Ocher, kaolin)

Description:  This dance shield has a fine incised traditional geometric pattern (presented on a custom bronze display base).  It is in excellent condition showing appropriate wear and use with 95 percent of its original pigments. There is a natural knot in the wood on the upper right side where some kaolin had worn off.  See the other Tutsi shield I have for sale since these would make a great pair together!  

A similar example is illustrated on page 205, figure 164 of "Guba" Vol. 2, by Jan Elsen and Ivan Baur.
