LAVISH BEADED LEATHER MIRROR
Origin: North African, Sahara Desert, Fulani or Tuareg People (Provenance: Recently found in an old UK collection) Period/Date: Late 19th- Early 20th Century Materials: mirror, leather, abrus seeds, yarn, fine thread, and paint Description: This beautifully made object of personal adornment would have been a highly prestigious object for its owner. Its construction is a marvel in itself. I'm especially struck by the labor required to make the tightly coiled leather beads. It is in amazing condition considering its age with all of its fringe intact. The mirror is tarnished and oxidized and some yarn is missing around the frame. Presented on display stand included.
