#15 FINE EARLY TONGAN ULA W/ BEAUTIFUL HANDGRIP AND IVORY INLAY
Origin: Period/Date: Late 18th-Early 19th century Materials: Root of a shrub, Whale Tooth Ivory Description: This rare type of ula is called an i ula tavatava or i ula mundu and is most known for its wide and elegant flanged head. This one is special because of its superb incised handgrip featuring a rich cluster of unusual geometric motifs! I'm just guessing that for every Tongan Ula there must be 50 or more Fijian Ulas. It retains an original Whale Tooth Ivory inlay on the butt. Through close examination it is apparent that the pin-wedges around the perimeter of the ivory are also made of ivory. This is an early technique which was commonly done using wooden pins. Its has acquired a dark rich patina turning to red. There is evidence of some old nail or staple holes around the perimeter of the butt. Some minor loss and wear as would be expected on any piece of this vintage. This ula does not have a custom stand but one could be ordered for an additional fee. Dimensions: Length 14.75" (37.5 cm), Width 4" (10 cm) Price: SOLD
Original Ivory inlay secured around the perimeter with ivory pin-wedges. Very old technique
