18TH C. TLINGIT TRAP STICK W/ TRANSFORMATIONAL SHAMANIC QUALITIES

Origin:  Northwest Coast, Tlingit People  (Provenance: Steven G. Alpert)

Period/Date: circa 1750's

Materials:  Rib bone of a Bear

Description:   Here is a rare fine quality Marten trap stick fashioned out of a bear's rib bone (Presented on a custom metal display stand).  The animal represents a bear, but what gives this item a special energy is its shamanic and transformational qualities!  The body of the bear is actually a shaman.  The whole composition represents the transfer of the animal's powers and abilities to its human owner.  Trapping martens was an important activity, and these sticks disappear quite early with the introduction of firearms.  There's a collection number in red ink "M82" of a type which we associate with the 19th century on the piece.  The patina, wear, and condition are excellent.  Northwest Coast Art of this vintage and craftsmanship are very difficult to find especially in this price range.

Dimensions:  Height 14"  (36 cm), Width 2"  (5 cm)

Price:  SOLD
