COLLECTION OF TONGAN TAPA BEATERS

Origin:  Polynesia, Tonga  (Provenance: From an old Washington State Collection )

Description:  A grouping of antique beaters known as "ikes" used in processing Tapa cloth.  Each has four incised vertical grooves carved on three sides and likely dates to the 19th century.

Dimensions:  Length 31 cm by 6 cm wide

"A" $200     29 by 6 cm, Some old losses on the corners

 

 

"B" $225     31.5 by 6.5 cm,  old knot hole on side of handle

 

 

"C" $225     30.5 by 6.5 cm,  extensively used w/ some very old losses

 

 

"D" $175     31 by 6.5 cm,  old loss to handle, chips and age cracks

 

 

       "E" $175     29.5 by 6 cm,  loss to a corner & chips on handle rim
