INVENTIVE AND WHIMSICAL PHILIPPINE FOOD SPOON WITH TWISTED NECK

 

Origin: Philippines, Northern Luzon, Likely Ifugao People     (Provenance: Ex. Serge Schoffel, Brussels.  Previously in an old Dutch Collection)

Period/Date:  Circa 1920's or before

Materials:  Blonde-tone Hardwood

Dimensions:  Height 9.75"  (25 cm),  Width 1.75"  (4.5 cm),  Width of Shaft .75"  (2 cm)

Description:   This whimsical spoon was made by a great artist (presented on a custom metal display stand).  What makes it special is that the artist couldn't restrain his creativity pushing the boundaries of what was acceptable and traditional.  It would have likely been made for an important occasion or presented to a  special guest.  Instead of arms and legs the figure has a "twisted" torso holding tension like it might snap back into position any minute!  Just terrific!  The delicately carved face wears a small hat.  Its bowl is sharply tapered inward.  The piece has acquired a warm rich patina from age and use.   It is even better in person than the photos suggest...
