PHILIPPINE SPOON FRAGMENT W/ CROSSED ARMS

 

Origin:  Philippines, N. Luzon, Ifugao People, Hapao area?    (Provenance:  Beyer family collection.  By descent through the family.  Acquired from Dr. Henry Otley Beyer's Granddaughter.  Dr. Beyer has been recognized as "The Father of Philippine Anthropology")

Period/Date: 19th century

Materials:  hardwood

Description:   A very early spoon handle fragment with figure having crossed arms on the chest.  It has a pierced hanging hole in the neck.  Interestingly, the face appears to have been harvested for wood shavings for ritual shamanic use.  

Dimensions:   Height 4 7/8"  (12.5 cm), Width 1 3/8"  (3.5 cm)
