MICRONESIAN PALAU "BAI" SPIRIT HOUSE MODEL 

 

Origin:  Micronesia, Palau or neighboring Island (Provenance: Acquired from Mr. Krever in Arizona whose father was on Naval duty in WWII.  He acquired the ceremonial house model and a pair of squatting figures in 1946.  These pieces were reportedly given to him as a gift by a family he helped out after the invasion of the Island)

Period/Date: circa 1930's-40's

Materials:  hardwood, natural pigments and trade paint

Description:  This carving of a "bai" model spirit house features a female figure with legs crossed.  It appears that the house has had several applications of paint over its lifetime.  The wood itself is very old, dehydrated and has a semi-encrusted patina especially on the back and sides of the pitched roof which are unpainted.  In good condition with a couple minor old chips.  The squatting figures seen in the last photo are sold separately.
