RARE & SUPERB SHONA SPEAR W/ WIREWORK COVERED SHAFT!

Origin: South Africa, likely Shona People     (Provenance:  In February we purchased a 350+ piece collection of African and Oceanic Weapons from an English Gentlemen in Suffolk UK.  This special "spear" is among a small group of quality pieces we've held back specifically for our website clients)

Period/Date: 19th century

Materials:  wood, forged iron, brass

Description:  This is the finest spear of its type we've ever owned!  We've had swords and knives with extensive wirework but never a full length spear.  It no doubt would have been used for fighting but also served as a highly prestigious object for its owner. It has a combination of braided as well as chain-work decoration covering the entire shaft and pommel.  Just spectacular!   It is in excellent condition  with only minor loss.   It servers as a testimony to the markers amazing skill, artistry and craftsmanship.  The leaf blade is finely worked with minor pitting.  The very tip has a slight wiggle to it.
