CONGO BARBED HARPOON SPEAR
Origin: Eastern Congo (Provenance: Ex. Peter Westerdijk, Netherlands (noted author, collector and African weapons expert). After "The Congo Museum" in the Netherlands Deaccessioned a large group of Congo weapons, Westerdijk purchased them privately and sold many of them to an English Gentlemen in Suffolk UK. In February we purchased a 350+ piece collection of African and Oceanic Weapons from this UK collector. This special "spear" is among a small group of quality pieces we've held back specifically for our website clients) Period/Date: 19th-Early 20th Century Materials: Hardwood, iron, cord Description: This incredible spear retains it original woven fiber cordage. Its shows long extensive use and is in excellent condition. Its shaft is flared at the end to allow a firm grip after the animal was darted. This method allowed the hunter control of the animal while it fought and eventually bled out. These are very scarce and seldom seen for sale. This example was probably used for hunting gazelle or equivalent size prey. Hunting large animals was often a group effort and extremely dangerous. It was not uncommon for a hunter to die or be seriously injured while attempting to take down a wild animal.
