IMPORTANT CONGO HIPPOPOTAMUS BARBED HARPOON SPEAR
Origin: Eastern Congo (Provenance: Ex. Peter Westerdijk, Netherlands (noted author, collector and African weapons expert). After "The Congo Museum" in the Netherlands Deaccessioned a large group of Congo weapons, Westerdijk purchased them privately and sold many of them to an English Gentlemen in Suffolk UK. In February we purchased a 350+ piece collection of African and Oceanic Weapons from this UK collector. This special "spear" is among a small group of quality pieces we've held back specifically for our website clients) Period/Date: 19th-Early 20th Century Materials: Hardwood, iron, cord, brass and iron coiled wire Description: This incredibly rare harpoon-spear was unique among all others in the group! For several reasons we know this large harpoon-spear was used exclusively for hunting Hippos. The design of the heavy single barb was an effective anchor once the flesh was penetrated. Also the width and gauge of the woven cord tells us this was meant to hold tremendous weight under great tension. Its shows long extensive use and is in good condition. Its shaft is flared at the end to allow a firm grip after the animal was darted. The hand grip of the lower portion of the shaft is embellished with brass and iron wrapping. Hippo hunting was a group effort and extremely dangerous. It was not uncommon for a hunter to die or be seriously wounded while attempting to take down this massive and aggressive beast. This method allowed the hunter control of the animal while it fought and bled out. The long strap cord allowed for a safe distance between the hunter and the prey. These are very scarce and seldom seen for sale. Dimensions: Length 62" (158 cm), Width 1.75" (4.5 cm) Price: SOLD
