OLD SOMALIA WARRIOR'S HIDE SHIELD

 

Origin:  E. Africa, Inland Somalia

Description:   An early 20th century shield likely made of Ox hide.  The round thick hide shield was used as an offensive weapon to Parry blows.  When not in use, it was worn on the owner's upper arm or hung across the shoulders.  It features attractive embossed decoration and is complete with its original handle.  In good condition, showing wear and use.  A similar example can be seen on page 106-107 of "Shields" From the collections of the Barbier-Mueller Museum, copyright 2000.
