Item Code: OC407-815

Origin:  Melanesia, Eastern Solomon Islands, San Christobal Island,   (Provenance: Old Dutch Collection)

Period/Date: late 19th century

Materials: Dark reddish hardwood

Description:  This club-shield is known as a "roromaraugi", and is presented on custom metal stand.  It had a defensive role in deflecting light spears and arrows with its primary function being reserved for more ceremonial use.  This example is special because of the inset bead eyes on the detailed figure!   The figure with elongated face and curved headdress is believed to have been a guardian spirit who reigned over men.  It has acquired a semi-encrusted rich shiny patina and is in excellent condition except for minor chips along the raised medial ridge on its head.  Presented on a custom metal display stand.

Dimensions:   Height 43"  (99.5 cm), Width 13.25"  (34 cm)
