UNUSUAL 19TH C. SOLOMON ISLANDS FIGURATIVE AMULET

Origin:   Melanesia, Solomon Islands, San Christobal Island  (Provenance: Originally sold by Norman Hurst, Hurst Gallery Cambridge Massachusetts, many years ago.)

Period/Date: Mid 19th century, possibly older

Materials: Dark reddish hardwood

Dimensions:  Height 9.25" (23.5 cm),  Width 1.75"  (4.5 cm)

Description:  You are looking at the lower portion of a parrying club-shield known as a "roromaraugi".    This lovely implement with classic seated dog faced figure was most likely retained as an "amulet" after an important club was smashed or as a trophy from a defeated adversary.  It has acquired a fantastic dark varied patina with crusty dark areas.  The area that was cut above the head is very well patinated as well (see photo).  Note:  The metal stand illustrated does not belong to the piece.  A custom metal stand is currently being made for it and will be included.

Price:   SOLD
