SUPERB WIREWORK SHONA PRESTIGE AXE

 

 

Origin: S. Africa, Zimbabwe, Likely Shona People  (Provenance: Acquired from an old collection of arms and armor in Vancouver BC)

Period/Date:  Late 19th- Early 20th century

Materials: Wood, brass wire, hand forged iron

Description:  This fine quality prestige axe is superb in form and execution!  Its shaft is entirely covered with brass wire using 4 separate weaving techniques.  The elegant hand forged iron blade features an undulating serpent head at the end.  The length of the shaft and the diameter of the blade are exactly "equal" showing impressive balance and virtuosity of craftsmanship.  Condition is excellent.   Presented on a custom bronze display base.
