19TH C. SHONA WIREWORK AXE W/ DECORATED BLADE

 

Origin:  S. Africa, Zimbabwe, Shona People    (Provenance: Ex. Max Willborg Collection, Stockholm Sweden. Much of Willborg's collection was sold at Christie’s Amsterdam in Dec. 2001)

Period/Date:  Late 19th Century

Materials:  Two-tone Hardwood, brass, steel

Description:  Here's a very handsome classic wirework axe featuring embossed/ tooled traditional decoration on the blade (presented on a custom metal stand not shown).  It has acquired a wonderful dark rich patina from long use.  In great condition with some minor wire loss to the top band.  This wonderful quality weapon serves as a testimony to the blacksmith's skill, artistry and vision.  Presented on a custom metal stand not shown.
