MAGNIFICENT 19TH C. SHARK TOOTH SWORD

Origin:  Micronesia, Gilbert Island (Kiribati)  (Provenance: Taylor Dale, Santa Fe New Mexico)

Period/Date:  19th or very early 20th century

Materials: Palm wood, coconut fiber, human hair, shark teeth, Palm Splath

Description:  A rare and classic Shark tooth weapon has two appendages and is presented on a custom metal display stand.  It is constructed from a length of tapering Palm wood with three rows of razor sharp Shark teeth inset between thin wooden spines and then pierced and tightly lashed with Human hair and coconut fibers.   Its two appendages have four rows of teeth which served as an effective hand guard.  There is no evidence it had a third appendage on the right side.  What's special about this example is its fine condition.  It retains most all of its teeth and only a handful are missing or broken.   In addition, it still has a 3 inch band of its original woven fiber above the hand grip!  It is rare to find a sword of this vintage in such a state of preservation!

Dimensions:   Height 42"  (106.8 cm), Width 9.75"  (25 cm)
