SMALL NEW GUINEA MIDDLE SEPIK FLUTE MASK

 

Origin:   New Guinea, East Sepik Province, Middle Sepik River   (Provenance:  Acquired from an old collection in Amsterdam)

Period/Date: Likely 1940's possibly older

Materials:  hardwood, lime, Nassa shell, natural adhesive

Description:  This small mask with outstretched tongue is presented on a custom display stand.  It was likely attached to a sacred bamboo flute.   It features traditional clan facial decoration retaining much of its lime pigments.  In addition to having a pierced nasal septum it has five other pierced holes used for attachment on the ears and top of the forehead.  It is in good condition with no loss.
