POWERFUL OLD SALAMPASU MASK
Origin: Central Africa, Zaire, Democratic Republic of Congo, Salampasu Tribe People (Provenance: Recently uncovered in an old San Francisco Estate Sale, by decent through the family) Period/Date: Early 20th Century Materials: Wood, rattan, fiber, kaolin and ocher pigments Description: This powerfully impressive mask is clad in varying thickness of copper sheeting. This is an old mask made of heavier gauge imperfect handmade copper pieces. It is presented on a custom wall mounted display stand allowing its long woven beard to float in mid air. It retains much of its Kaolin and ocher and is in overall fine condition for its age. Some webbing on the back is broken away. It has acquired a dry semi-encrusted patina especially around the chin and mouth area. An old handwritten label reads "salem pasu, Zaire Congo".
