PENDE CEREMONIAL ADZE

 

Origin: Central Africa, Dem. Rep of Congo, Pende People    (Provenance: Acquired from an old Italian collection)

Period/Date: At least early 20th century, possibly older

Materials:  Hardwood, Iron, traces of green paint

Description:  This adze has its original forged iron blade with twisted "rams horn" terminals.  The shaft is decorated with a relief-carved spiraling snake.   The face has a serene expression and has traces of old green paint.  Shows long traditional use, original patina and presented on custom bronze base.
