19TH C. STONE-CARVED PAPUAN GULF BAMBOO TOBACCO PIPE

 

Origin:  New Guinea, South Coast Papuan Gulf  (Provenance: Acquired at an estate auction at Bonhams in Oxford England- March 16th 2011.  Ex. collection of Dr. Joseph Albert Blayney, Chief Medical Officer and RM, Central Division, British New Guinea 1895 – 1901, and thence by descent to Dr. Blayney's grandson)

Period/Date:  Last quarter of the 19th century

Materials: Bamboo

Description:  This very early stone-carved bamboo smoking pipe "wadulu" featuring geometric decoration and was collected at the same time as the other example I'm selling.  In average condition with several age cracks.
