EXTRAORDINARY CARVED WOODEN FEMALE MONKEY, GENITALIA-

Origin:  Northern India, possibly Bhutan?     (Provenance: Acquired from an old collection in Nova Scotia)

Period/Date: Early 20th C.

Materials:  Hardwood, red paint, pigment, beads

Description:  Here's a wonderfully carved seated monkey with an exuberantly expressive face.  It has inset trade bead eyes with crooked eyebrows.  Its surfaces has layers of red and black pigments now oxidized from age and use.  The figure was likely used in an interior shrine.  What's most impressive is the genitalia on the bottom which is carved in stunning detail!  In good condition with some minor dings and scratches.  One old glued mend to the left foot.
