PAIR OF MENTAWAI "DOLPHIN" FORM CANOE PADDLES

Item Code: IND104-0531

Origin:  Indonesia, Mentawai Islands

Description:  A pair of early  20th century dark hardwood paddles called "tuku".  Their heads resemble stylized Bottlenose Dolphins with crescent tail-like handle terminals.  The arched shaped of the terminal also allowed it to fit comfortably under the armpit allowing the opposite arm to be free.  Each shows extensive traditional use and has acquired dark varied patinas, especially paddle (B).   This paddle does have a narrow channel of wood missing on the opposite side of the head which no doubt happened years ago.

Dimensions:  (A) Length 47" (120 cm),  Width 7"  (17.5 cm)    (B) Length 49.75" (126.5 cm),  Width 6.5"  (16.5 cm)
