18TH- 19TH C. MAORI TEWATEWA STAFF CLUB

 

Origin: Polynesian, New Zealand Maori People     (Provenance:  Ex. Raymond Handley collection, San Francisco (pervious owner of Folk Art International, once located in the Frank Lloyd Wright building at 140 Maiden Lane)

Period/Date: Late 18th to early 19th century

Materials:  dense reddish hardwood

Description:  Although damaged in combat, this example has a thin elegant head and shows beautiful rippling on the shaft as well as the head.  Its color is deep, dark and rich.  I've included some close up photos of the tool marks.
