LARGE MAGNIFICENT CONTEMPORARY MAORI DOOR LINTEL
Origin:
Period/Date: Mid-20th Century? Materials: Hardwood slab, Pua/ haliotis shell Description: This large incredible door lintel panel, measuring nearly 6 feet wide, is called a "pare" or a "korupe". Large panels like this were originally fitted above the doorway of a chief's house and later on in the 19th century above important meeting houses. It features a central female figure framed by "manaia" on each side. Although the exact Maori artist is unknown at this time, he was undoubted a highly skilled and accomplished craftsman! It would have been extremely labor-intensive to make especially with all of the classic open work. This piece is in good condition showing normal wear with some minor scratches and rubbing mostly to the edges. It is very dramatic in person and measures up to 4 inches thick in places! This piece would look sensational over a grand doorway or above a fireplace mantel. Few if any of us will be fortunate to ever own an 18th or 19th century example, since most are in museums, but this is the next best thing. Dimensions: Width 67.5" (171.5 cm), Height: 31.5" (80 cm), Depth 3-4" (7.5-10 cm) Price: request by email Shipping: Crating required. Weight approx. 75 to 85 lbs. Will Ship internationally.
